Exploring Local Waters: Hudson Canyon
Teachers can learn how to use the Portal as a classroom tool in this professional development course, offered by the Wildlife Conservation Society. From the course's description:
Take a deeper dive into the Hudson Canyon, one of the largest submarine
canyons in the world, located just 100 miles east of NYC! This
bio-diverse habitat offers a unique opportunity for an interdisciplinary
lesson modeling civic participation, by highlighting a local,
environmental human impact issue and proposing a course of action. In
this course, you will work in groups to learn more about the ways
stakeholders benefit from the canyon (as a natural and economic
resource) and represent their viewpoints in proposing the Hudson Canyon
as a marine sanctuary. Activities using data portals and modeling deep
sea exploration promote exciting ways to expand your STEM strategies.
Teachers will model student learning opportunities, brainstorm
differentiation options for diverse learners, and develop an action plan
for implementing course content into their curriculum.
