MidA RPB Healthy Ocean Indicators Workshop

You are invited to a workshop hosted by MARCO, on behalf of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Planning Body’s Healthy Ocean Ecosystem Indicators Steering Committee, to engage scientists, stakeholders and the public in the development of ecosystem indicators.

The workshop is guided by the Mid-Atlantic Regional Ocean Action Plan key principles from Health Ocean Ecosystem Action 5:

• Need to better understand ecosystem changes as they occur, and how those changes impact and are impacted by human activity;
• Ocean health indicators will focus on the Mid-Atlantic region and, to the extent feasible, be derived from existing data collection and monitoring efforts; and,
• Scientists, fishermen, other stakeholders, and Traditional Knowledge holders will be engaged during design and evaluation of indicators.

The workshop will be highly interactive, seeking to engage scientists, agencies, and Mid-Atlantic stakeholders in a robust exploration of possible ecosystem indicators for the Ocean Action Plan, including physical and atmospheric drivers, anthropogenic pressures, benthic and pelagic habitats, upper and lower marine life trophic levels, and how those indicators might be displayed and communicated. Prior to the workshop, a white paper to support the discussion will be available.
